LE MÉPRIS – poster

Few films have left such a lasting mark on cinema, architecture and visual culture as Le Mépris (Contempt), directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1963 and inspired by Alberto Moravia’s novel.

This selection brings together two French posters connected by the same story, more than fifty years apart.

The first is the iconic French theatrical poster illustrated by Georges Allard, created for the film’s original release. With Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli and Fritz Lang, it has become one of the most recognisable images of the French New Wave.

The second is the official poster of the 69th Cannes Film Festival (2016). Rather than portraying actors, it pays tribute to one of cinema’s most unforgettable locations: the staircase of Casa Malaparte in Capri, immortalised in the film’s final sequence.

Together, they tell the story of a film that continues to inspire generations of filmmakers, architects and collectors. A dialogue between 1963 and 2016.
